Old Home Superhomes open to the public
On 21st and 22nd September five houses from the Old Home Superhome project will open their doors for visitors. Members of the public will be able to see first hand how homeowners have reduced their homes emissions by at least 60% by installing energy efficiency measures and low and zero carbon technologies.
The Sustainable Energy Academy’s, Old Homes Super Homes Network (members of the Existing Homes Alliance ) is a network of old homes which have been retrofitted by homeowners to cut CO2 emissions. This has included innovative measures such as ground source heat pumps, photovoltaics, low energy lighting, in addition to energy saving measures such as solid wall insulation and internal insulation, using environmentally friendly fabrics such as sheep’s wool and recycled wood fibre. The network aims to provide exemplar case studies to show that it is possible to achieve deep cuts in CO2 emissions from the UK’s existing housing stock.
If you would like to find an energy-saving house near you, visit the Sustainable Energy Academy website and use the Open House ‘online search or click on ‘Open Days’.
Also open this weekend is the Camden Ecohouse, a Victorian house renovated to cut carbon emissions by up to 80 per cent. The house is open for free public tours every Sunday, 2-5pm, until 12th October and on Saturday 20th and Sunday 21st September, 10am-5pm. For more details visit the Camden Council website .
